the world needs to hear your story

Stigma and discrimination, including auto-stigmatization and self-discrimination, contribute to the suffering and disability associated with mental illness and, in some cases, can be worse than the illness itself. Stigmatization can result in a reluctance to seek help or treatment. If your entourage (family, friends, and social network) does not understand what an afflicted person is going through, this can trigger confusion and isolation. You may believe that you will never succeed at challenges nor improve your situation, and the lack of knowledge and understanding by family, friends, caregivers, co-workers, or others, may contribute to poor support.

Because mental illness is still a difficult topic for many, the proper conversations are not being had. Concerned members of the entourage may default to seemingly rational advice like “just try harder," "you have to eat" or "look at the bright side of life" to a person living with a mental illness. It's easy to dismiss mental illness if you don't understand what is actually going on. Education is key.

”My brother died from depression. He also frequently exercised, had supportive friends/family, was successful in school & work. He had goals that he was constantly reaching- he still killed himself. People who are depressed are not weak-minded- they are sick. Understand this."

Why KTS?

Public stigma is the reaction that the general population has to people with mental illness. Self-stigma is the prejudice which people with mental illness turn against themselves. Both public and self-stigma may be understood in terms of three components: stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination.

We hope KTS will be able to showcase the harsh reality of what it is to live with a mental illness. For this, we need your input, your experiences, your transparency. KTS wants to provide a safe place for those living with a mental illness.
